Day 28: Ely, Nevada
To the Nevada Northern Railway where the Turkey Vultures, otherwise known as Buzzards, are circling high above. The picture shows the coal chutes and the water tower. We take the diesel train to the mine at Ruth. We ride alongside Hwy 50, the loneliest road in America. On return we tour the engine sheds.
We drive out to McGill to see the old railroad depot at the Kennecott smelter, now closed. A kindly Vietnam-vet shows us the way in his pickup truck - he speaks of hard times in America. We shake hands.
