Dome £1 billion, Olympics £10 billion

If at first you make a large cock-up why not go for broke next time out? Suitcases full of cash stuffed with your money are being handed out with abandon. Somebody is getting very rich out of four weeks of drug-fuelled sport. One thing you can be sure of it isn't going to be the taxpayer or the poor mugs who buy the lottery tickets.

The Green Monster is gone

David Tremayne pays tribute to Art Arfons. I saw Art perform at the IHRA's All-American Nationals at Bristol International Dragway on August 29, 1971:
"Later in the month I caught the last day of action at the newly formed International Hot Rod Association's championship drags at Bristol International Raceway, Bristol, Tennessee on August 27th - 29th. This super strip facility lies between two mountains in Thunder Valley and after paying $10 entrance fee I was not disappointed with the show. Within five minutes of arrival Art Arfons came to the line with the Super Cyclops jet dragster and hit the five second bracket at over 290 m.p.h. I felt I had already had my value for money, what would they do for an encore?"
More herehere and here. We only just lost Evel Knievel. Where have all the daredevils gone?

Radio gigging III

Fourteen shows done - last weekday prog tonight 17:00 until 19:00, featuring the Commercial Square Bonfire Society boys after 18:00 [listen out for "Anarchy in the UK" by the Sex Pistols]. Then the big bonfire thrash on Monday night when I'll be calling the whole event from 18:00 until midnight.
Saturday is bonfire night in Newick, also at Battle; Sunday is Badge night for many of the societies and Monday is the real thing when Lewes astonishes itself and the world with the greatest bonfire bash known to man.
Good luck to all the bonfire boys and girls - keep it safe and keep it spectacular - no political correctness required. If you are dripping wet, metaphorically speaking, please stay home - Bonfire is not for the faint hearted! For those who have to stay home anyway catch the whole event on Rocket FM - the next best thing to being there!
Good luck to the Baltimore Bonfire Society in Maryland, USA, with their celebration on Saturday.

For their autumn tour Jack and Richard chose two Moulton bicycles to ride from near Oswestry, Shropshire to Lewes in Sussex. Rupert to join ...
